I once followed David Lebovitz through Paris on a culinary adventure. To be a bit more precise, I should say followed in his footsteps, but that is the pleasure of seeking out a professional pastry chef’s recommendations, of which there are plenty in his delightfully honest book, The Sweet Life in Paris. After a day of exploring little shops from the first to the twelfth arrondissements, I headed home loaded with sugar pearls (with no idea what to do with them), dark chocolates, madeleine pans (despite not owning an oven), thus the final item, fresh madeleines.
When Kasia from Love in the City of Lights mentioned Lebovitz was back in town for a book signing, I knew I couldn’t miss the chance to meet him in person, as well as chat with fellow fans and munch on a few sugary treats from Sugarplum Cake Shop, a little American coffee shop not far from the famous market street, rue Mouffetard.

Just look at all those delicious desserts!
I arrived early because I wasn’t too sure what to expect. Would there be a long line? Would they run out of books to sell? This idea was actually ingenious because it gave me a chance to try one of Sugarplum’s delicious cakes while flipping through Lebovitz’s dessert cookbooks filled with tantalizing recipes. The coffee shop was filled with customers hoping to indulge their sweet-tooth all the while I was on total sugar overload! The carrot cake was delicious, especially the frosting, but my one gripe was that I was single-handedly faced with eating the massive piece large enough for three. I found it a tad ironic that while I was struggling to eat this mother-load of sugary goodness, I was reading David Lebovitz’s exasperation with the very same conundrum (see the Intro to The Sweet Life in Paris), not to mention waiting for the man himself! Regardless of my hyper heartbeat and sugar headache, I was happy to have had the chance to try the offerings of somewhere new and I know where I’ll be heading next time I have a serious sugar craving.

Three bites in and I was ready to share the rest of the carrot cake with friends! Oh but it was soooo good!
Finally the moment I was waiting for! David Lebovitz arrived and I made my way through the line with a couple new additions to my library (read: expensive luggage fees for habitually heavy suitcases). He happily signed my Sweet Life in Paris before offering some pecan bars. Then we chatted about carrot cake before I moved along. Perhaps I should have mentioned that his Paris suggestions were helpful and have inspired many great mini-adventures through Paris. Or that I always look forward to suggestions shared on his blog, but I was just happy to be able to participate in an exciting Paris event I used to read about with envy from my village in Provence.

David Lebovitz signing away at Sugarplum Cake Shop!
As fans poured in, I ran into a few familiar faces. Kasia’s arrival was soon followed by Sion (Paris (Im)Perfect) and later Jennifer (Jennyphoria). A little happenstance Paris blogger reunion was well underway as were free samples from a variety of Sugarplum treats on the house (if only I’d known). It’s a luxury randomly bumping into friends and acquaintances, and as I left the bustling event, books in hand, city aglow against the darkened sky, happy thoughts of new relationships forming, I was reminded just how much I’m finally feeling at home.

I always think of books the same way, too! That is, adding to my already overweight bags. That cake looked delicious!!!
It’s an addiction, really. I just can’t help myself! I love books.
OMG I can’t stop looking at that cake!!!!!!! How great that you got to meet him!
I know, right? Isn’t it perfect? And to think all baked by the lovely ladies running the shop.
Great seeing you last night! Thanks for a great write-up of the event. Next time I’ll share the carrot cake with you
Loved seeing you too! Nice surprise. And I would be happy to share my carrot cake!
It’s great to read about you really enjoying being in Paris
This looks like a great book and cafe to check out next time I’m in Paris!
It was cute! Plus right off of Rue Mouffetard so you’d have a few great sites to see in the area as well.
Yay you met him! I am sure I found your blog through a comment you left on his site.
Lebovitz bringing all us bloggers together! I love meeting fellow writers. They have so much advice that I want them to give, hah. I still haven’t read any of his books as of yet. I have such a long list to get through before I can allow myself to read for the pure pleasure. Right now I am reading for inspiration for my poetry project and for a sort of instruction. But maybe in April, after graduation I will be able to get to his great list of books!
The treats look amazing too.

Im in the middle of The Sweet Life of Paris – the only book that’s not fully a cookbook (or so I believe…) and I have to say I’m really enjoying it. He paints the real picture – the pro’s and con’s in a way that avoids the typical reader to get defensive. It’s really hard living in Paris to talk about the bad side of things – most people can’t get past the idea that you live in Paris. But living in another country as a foreigner from anywhere is difficult, even if the city has a lot to offer. I wish I could write like he does. And then there are the recipes…
adorei.adoro bolo, café e chá.suas fotos sao lindas .sempre fico com fome quando vejo elas.é uma pena não sentir o cheiro deve ser delicioso.UMA DOCE VIDA EM PARIS PARA VOCE.SEMPRE
GOOD LUCK!
lol – had to go to google translate for that one! but I’m glad you are loving it and coffee is one of my favorite things too
Ah! I just ordered Sugar Plum’s carrot cake for Sir Lancelot’s birthday party this weekend! I haven’t been to their shop yet but 1) it’s so great to see such a yummy preview and 2) I can’t wait to pick the cake up and see the shop! Merci Stephanie!
No one at your party will be disappointed! Since then I have met quite a few people who swear by that cake and I have been craving it myself these last few days. If you have the time, order a coffee and enjoy the ambiance! It’s a very cute shop with lots of great books to flip through. Happy Birthday to Sir Lancelot!
Hello! I just discovered your blog through a link on Christine in Spain and wanted to tell you that it is beautiful! I’m so jealous you got to meet David– I read his blog all the time and have all of his books (fantastic recipes!) If you’re ever in Madrid let me know and I’ll take you for a tapa!
That’s so sweet of you Lauren! I will definitely look you up if I head down to Spain. And if you head to Paris we’ll have to try David Lebovitz’s new application and go pastry hunting!
