Taking the Bite out of Fall with Lola’s Cookies

The verdict is in: Summer was so last month, Fall is the new Spring and scarves are the accessory not to be caught dead without. Between running to classes and looking for ways to give my tired writing hand a break from tiresome note-taking, I’m reminded of just how much I loved Paris this time of year when I first lived here four years back. The cool air, the browning leaves, the clear blue sky: it’s an idyllic season that brings back the sentiments of a childhood well spent outdoors. Then on days I find a free moment to stroll about Paris in this gradual shift to Winter… well, I’ve been one happy girl lately.

There are a few things that make this season burst with that extra je ne sais quoi, of which my favorite is the earlier evenings spent curled up with a warm blanket, candles flickering, my current book, hot chocolate with a large hat of whipped cream… and fresh baked cookies from home. Perhaps the sun’s earlier departure is what propelled me to spontaneously order a dozen treats from Lola’s Cookies, or perhaps I was just tired of hearing how delicious they were without trying them for myself.

Finally the moment arrived for me to connect with Lindsey, one of the most savvy expats I have met and a fellow Philadelphian, to pick up my batch of lemon white chocolate cashew. It was so hard to pick which cookie I thought I would enjoy the most, all of them seem so delicious. Not to mention Lola’s Cookies recently launched the mouthwatering Pumpkin Pecan Cake Bar, and what more could I want with my mini-festivals for Autumn? In the end I went for what was most original and naturally, I loved them. The natural tartness of fresh lemon was lulled by the creamy white chocolate chips and sugary cookie. They made (yes, past tense as they’ve seemed to have suspiciously disappeared) the perfect treat with coffee or tea, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t eat a few for breakfast. Could you really expect me to resist? The best part was knowing a friend added her own special touch.

Paris has put many amazing people in my path, and credit goes to a combination of the creativity the city inspires and the number of expats forced to think outside the box in order to really thrive here… or even just to stay. It makes for an interesting population from all different walks of life and I’m so happy to suddenly find myself among them. Does this mean I’ve finally made it? It seems too soon to say, but I’m forever grateful. Especially when baking cookies that taste like home is a part of supporting the Parisian lifestyle.

Do you have any expat-friends who inspire you? How so?

Order your fresh batch of Lola’s Cookies online and if you order by October 26, you’ll be able to get Halloween sugar cookies! How cute would that be!

Wow! Those look so good! I think I would go for the lemon , too. I have attempted cookies only once since i arrived in August, and they spread all over the tray and were kind of flat. But delicious! Lola’s has inspired me to keep trying…

You should definitely try again! I know it’s possible to bake them without baking soda or powder – there is something French that works as a replacement though I haven’t tried it — I don’t have an oven :( Last year at a friends place in the Loire I was able to bake pumpkin muffins with mascarpone frosting! They were dense but oh so very delicious! So basically, continue baking!

They sure look yummy! And it’s hard to find good cookies in France I find.

So true! My only other reference was this place called Emily’s in Nice. I felt like I was biting into a chunk of sugar!! So gross! The owners were anglophone so I was a bit surprised there cookies lacked proper balance between the flour and sugar…
