My Parisian Home

Post image for My Parisian Home

There is no place like home and there is no place like Paris. So what do you get when you have both? Perfection. And while my new apartment may be small, it’s essentially all mine. I can’t say I have much to complain about.

The cute little mug and saucer is a mismatched set of four I found in Nice.

I met with my university yesterday – yes, the rentrée is official this final week of August. Coming two weeks before my official début was the best thing I could have done for myself. While I’m no stranger to the city, I felt thrust into an all new environment. The extra time helped me collect my thoughts, but more importantly, transform my surroundings into that special place called home.

I found the pink floral throw in a little fabric store while passing through Tours.

To be completely honest, I had no idea what theme my apartment would inevitably portray. Many of my belongings were boxed up in a storage unit, forgotten and waiting for my return to France. Others I brought along with me from the States. It was like Christmas opening up all the boxes of souvenirs I’d collected during my grand voyage touring the country earlier this summer. What could have been a mismatched, bare-essentials studio became this happy explosion of mismatched floral patterns. This was a surprise even to me; I wasn’t aware I liked florals so much (well… I suppose you might point out my blog header). None the less, I love how it turned out – so French shabby chic, or rather French Romanticism, even if it seems like an entire girls dorm blew up in this little space.

I used my Marseille mug to hold rolled napkins. The dishtowels are from Bordeaux and Aix en Provence. And then there are my mugs with little plates (Nice) and vase (the Loire).

I was a bit nervous about my apartment before I arrived having never stepped foot in it, but it appears I had little to be worried about (best case scenario). I’m located on a quiet street in one of my favorite areas of Paris. Better yet, I get full streams of golden sunlight every afternoon. This will be especially appreciated as the Paris grey sets in and temperatures drop with the first signs of winter. I had only intended on staying in this apartment for a few months while I worked tirelessly on finding a different place – hopefully one a bit larger. But all that seems so pointless now. I’m here to stay.

This toile table clothe was handmade in Arles by the sweetest lady, and I picked out mismatching floral napkins to go with it from the same boutique. The white cover is from the market in Amboise. The picture frames in the back I found while exploring Paris and Antibes.

There are only a few things missing from this apartment – my family, my friends and my animals. I can’t wait until I have a place perfect enough to bring my cat here. Until then, pictures and spontaneous visits to random pet stores are going to have to do (I’ve already had a date with two melt-your-heart-adorable Chihuahua puppies). Maybe I should run a classified for someone who would let me borrow their dog once a week… Or I could just get a super fluffy stuffed animal. [that's sarcasm, by the way... maybe.]

The vase is one of a pair I found at a vide-grenier in the Loire Valley for a mere 3€. The ornate mirror frame is from the most adorable boutique in Antibes.

What a difference it made to finally finish unpacking and to find a place for this and that. There are still a few things I hope to adjust as the months pass but overall I am one happy girl and relieved to see how seamlessly all of my France discoveries have fit together. Not only does this apartment reflect myself, it also represents my journey to Paris. It’s officially my home sweet home.

What special Frenchie finds do you have decorating your home? Do you have a special story behind them?

Félicitations! You have just arrived, and have already created “a home.” Your new place looks cozy and welcoming. Like in Seattle, the importance of big windows and light is not to be underestimated in Paris! I love surrounding myself with small souvenirs collected during my travels. It seems you do too. Bonne installation, et bonne rentrée!

Merci Veronique! It’s great to be all settled in – I’m so happy I planned ahead and am not arriving right when I need to begin with my internship and university. Things are really cheerful in this apartment too which makes it an uplifting place for me to spend my time studying. I’m excited about it.

I know it does – your most adorable photos of Léonie really melt my heart. You know how to capture that kittens sweet spirit and I can tell she certainly has a great home. Until I can have my little Animal Family back under one roof, I’m just going to have to stare at Léonie’s photos all day! ;)

Hi Stephanie! You and I arrived at the same time- me from Houston with my hubbie, daughter, and ….DOG! He is a 2 1/2 year old golden retriever and there will be times we need a dog sitter, so if you are serious, let me know.
Your apartment looks great- I agree- you should stay!

Looks like a cozy, charming space to me! Decorating is ALL in the little touches. For me, it’s often with candles and the placement of books! I’ll invite you over, you’ll see!

I would love that! And my place is just big enough to have a few people over so you can expect a return invitation! Still haven’t added the candles but I do love the little space I have on my bookcase (where the flowers are) which I had to venture out to Ikea to find before lugging it back to Paris. It’s amazing how the little touches make it feel all the more like home – perhaps you could inspire me with where to put some new candles.

What a beautiful, sophisticated place! You can really see the influence of having lived in Provence, even if you’re glad to be up in the capital now :) I hope your adjustment continues smoothly!

It does scream a bit of Provence, doesn’t it? Or more French Country – but not so much an urban creation in Paris. It’s feeling great being settled in! :)

Stephanie, your place is so charming! Welcome back. I’m glad that you found a place that feels like home. And if you are ever looking for a dog to cuddle, Moxie is always available :)

Stephanie August 31, 2011 at 08:33

Hey Jenny! Moxie has been on my mind, I’m not going to lie. But then again so has that dog that peed on your friend at Tuileries… Hope you’ve had much more successful visits to the dog park lately?

Jennyphoria September 2, 2011 at 06:29

Ha! That certainly was memorable. And hopefully a one-time thing. I promise Moxie is much better behaved. :)

What a lovely apartment! I think a place really becomes ‘home’ when you can fill it with special things that remind you of special people or places–it defines us, in a way. I haven’t found my special “Frenchie” finds yet, but I have filled my home with Italian treasures from my travels: http://goo.gl/0lfgi .
I look forward to reading more about your journey!

Lovely treasures from Italy, Julie! It is special to surround yourself with memories whether they come from items or from photos. That’s one reason I love finding picture frames on my travels because then I can have both. I see you have some special Italian keepsakes surrounding you :)

I love all the patterns ! I would die for that expresso cup and plate. Too sweet! Ahh expresso I miss you.

Those espresso cups and little plates are my absolute favorite! I bought a set for my future sister-in-law and my mom has the cutest cereal bowls from the same place. I’m wishing I had more of it now that I’m all settled in but at least the little espresso cup with just enough space for a little cookie or chocolate still makes me smile :)

Love your apartment! Glad to see you are all settled. Maybe you could walk dogs for extra cash? as for my own home, my dad surprised me with a metal fleur de lys that used to belong to a Parisienne fence. I use it as a book end. I have a painting by Alphonse mucha ( reproduction) but has French on it and has some of the lovely colours that belong to your apartment, so it is “French” enough pour moi!

Thanks Murissa – I love Alphonse Mucha. I have a little matchbox from Prague that I keep around. For Halloween one year I was one of Mucha’s creations – Autumn. It was a lot of fun and I was proud of the costume – I made it myself. I’ve been wanting to go to the marché aux puces outside of Paris to see if I can’t find a few things like your fleur de lys. I need some bookends – that’s a great idea and very sweet of your dad :) Certainly considering the dog walking. Any jobs I pick up will depend on my schedule at school – so far it seems like free time will be tough to find.

Thanks Tuula – many are reminders of the south of France. Two completely different worlds, Paris and Provence… I love that about France.

Lol – 66 square feet is not my idea of huge. Though it’s at least 3x larger than my little chambre de bonne back in 2008. Apartments in the US are certainly larger – I think adding another person to this room for any length of time would suffocate me… But there is room for one more to visit! ;)

Carina September 1, 2011 at 18:23

It looks suspiciously like Tim-Tams in that second picture? :)

Reply

Stephanie September 2, 2011 at 01:54

Those most certainly are Tim-Tams. Some friends of mine studying abroad in Australia a few years back introduced me to the Tim-Tam Slam. Since these delicious melty-chocolate-goodness-cookies are hard to find in the US, I am stocking up here :)

Ahhhh…My dear Stephanie. This blog entry truly reflects your personality and sense of style. Everything looks so familiar and makes me feel right at home” away from home”. And…the reflections remind me of good times in the recent past of our Le Grand Voyage and treasures collected to keep the journey alive everyday. If you were to visit my home you would find treasures I collected that resonated with me, reminding me of a journey shared with a member of our family that I love and admire..YOU. I love the flowers and may flowers forever be a living reminder of the beauty of my love for you.

Your place is amazing! I love the picture by the window, it just says “France” to me. Wooden floor, old windows, flowers… I’m feeling a bit homesick now. I love my Canadian home because everything actually works (unless in old French appartment) but still, there is a certain je ne sais quoi I’m missing!

Reply

Stephanie September 8, 2011 at 14:26

Hey Zhy – yes, it feels so Paris. Especially with the frequent scooters rumbling by and the French chatter pouring in from the street. :) I love it!
